MY DAMNED TOES HURT!

20:37 Jan 29 2008
Times Read: 774

I woke up around 3:00 this morning thirsty. I decided to head downstairs to the kitchen for a glass of iced water.

I made it down the 1st three steps to the landing where the stairs turn 90 degrees to the left. My foot slipped on the next step and I landed on my ass and wend feet first down the rest of the stairs. On the way down my toes went down the balusters like a playing car in the spokes of a bike wheel!

Ouch!

It wasn't too bad this morning one toe badly brusied and a few a bit swollen. I've been on my feet all day today, however, and my toes feel like they are going to explode!

Now...Stop reading this crap...And GO read her journal!

Ouch!

I messed up something in my right hand this weekend.

Gina and I went to Wal-Mart on Saturday to pick up some stuff. On the way out we each got a soda. We got in the car and I went to open the soda bottle and a searing pain shot from my hand and up my arm, then my thumb and the 3 adjacent fingers went numb.

My hand felt pretty funky all the rest of saturnday and most of sunday. This morning when I got up it actually felt better. No issue walking the dog, making coffee and breakfast, driving to work, checking email. I went to go check my mailbox and get a cup of coffee. Opening the door to the cafeteria...WHAM, the same thing that happened Saturday with the soda bottle.

I think it's a carpal tunnel deal. Hopefully it will calm down or else I will have to have it looked at. I'm not too fond of the idea of having someone poke around inside my wrist. But having half my hand numb is no picnic either!

Time to pay up!

02:41 Jan 19 2008
Times Read: 861

Well, It's time to pay up for all of the overindulgance from the Holidays.

I went to the Dr. earlier this weel for my standard 3 month check-up on my diabetes. I get a quick check up, check my feet for neuropathy and a urine check for miroalbumie (To check for Kidney function) as well as a lipid profile (Cholesterol (HDL & LDL) and Triglycerides) and HbA1C - which checks for long term blood sugar concentrations.

Well as soon as the doctor walked in and looked at my chart he started bitching me out for gaining 8 lbs. We went through the exam and then the nurse drew the blood for the various tests and I went and peed in the little jar.

Today he called back with the blood test results and, once again, my triglycerides are very high. So he changed the dose on one of my meds and told me to come back for another blood test in 3 weeks. He also told me "You know, if you get up off of your ass and get some exercise this would be MUCH easier on both of us".

SO, I guess I better start eating better and hit the damned gym!

Lurking vs. Not Lurking

17:52 Jan 15 2008
Times Read: 929

Until recently I spent most of my time on VR in "lurking" mode. I have recently been turning off lurking and it has resulted in some wonderful conversation with folks who sent me a message because they saw I was on. I would have missed these if I had been lurking.

On the other hand I DID get two wacky messages from young ladies looking to "hook up". WTF? Did they read my profile? Why on earth would someone 25 years old or younger attempt an on-line hook up with a married, overweight, grey haired old dude like me? I can see why the majority of my female frends on here stay lurking. They must get innundated with crap like this, and worse. As they are all 1) younger than me, 2) VERY attractive phisically. The risk to the male equivilent to the girls that messaged me are that they are also very intelligent and sure of themselves!

Oh well, I;ve rambled enought. Send me a message if you catch me not lurking. But really, ask Gina first if it's OK before yoy hit on me!

Cancer sucks (Not not OUR Cancer).

22:26 Jan 11 2008
Times Read: 983

Yes, Cancer sucks. Not the fine gentleman that runs VR, but the scourge that takes away so many or those we hold dear.

On Decemer 21st the 35 year old daughter of some friends passed away as a result of breast cancer. She left behind a husband and two little girls. SHe suffered greatly with this disease for many months before it finally claimed her life.

A very good friend our ours had breast cancer some years ago, and underwent surgery, chemothearapy etc. She has been doing well for some time now, but recently had some liver issues, which they initially thought were gall bladder related. It turns out she now has cancer there which they believe is a metastisis of the original breast cancer that has been lying dormant. She underwent surgery for this cancer at Johns Hopkins Cancer Center in Baltimore this week. We are still waiting to hear the outcome and prognosis.

Gina's closest friend had a Mamogram this week. She just heard today that they found something suspicious in the reading of the mamogram, and that she should contact her doctor. She called her doctor, who, of course, has not ye received the report of the mamogram from the radiologist. So she is face with an agonizing wait all weekend until she hears from her doctor as to what the next steps will be.

My own father died from pancreatic cancer when I was 19. My oldest sister was claimed by colon cancer at the age of 53. It seems you can't go a month without learning of someone who has to fight this horrible fight.

FUCK YOU CANCER!

I have to agree. I am 19 years old and I have cancer. My mother is a 4 time survivor of breast cancer and I think its time something is done about it. I can't get treatment because I don't have the money and the government is refusing to help me.

I feel that the more people that are aware of how bad it is the better. ^_^

Dominars

22:19 Jan 09 2008
Times Read: 1,025

Reading some recent journal entries about and by Dominars got me to thinking about The Dominars vis The Forum.

Often while going through the Forum I wish I were a Dominar. I see so much pure crap that I would delete, due to atrocious spelling, non existant syntax or plain stupidity. But then I consider...I usually can take the forum only in small doses. Once I have seen enought to turn my stomach or to make my head hurt, I go off to do or see something else. If I were a Dominar, I would be compelled by duty to continue slogging though the muck and mire that is the Forum and attempt to bring order and decorum into this wasteland. I would go crazy!

Black & White

Black and White

(Under age 40? You won't understand.)

You could hardly see for all the snow,

Spread the rabbit ears as far as they go.

Pull a chair up to the TV set,

"Good Night, David. Good Night, Chet."

My Mom used to cut chicken, chop eggs and spread mayo on the same cutting board with the same knife and no bleach, but we didn't seem to get food poisoning.

My Mom used to defrost hamburger on the counter AND I used to eat it raw sometimes, too. Our school sandwiches were wrapped in wax paper in a brown paper bag, not in ice-pack coolers, but I can't remember getting e coli.

Almost all of us would have rather gone swimming in the lake instead of a pristine pool (talk about boring), no beach closures then.

The term cell phone would have conjured up a phone in a jail cell, and a pager was the school PA system.

We all took gym, not PE, and risked permanent injury with a pair of high top Keds (only worn in gym) instead of having cross-training athletic shoes with air cushion soles and built in light reflectors. I can't recall any injuries but they must have happened because they tell us how much safer we are now.

Flunking gym was not an option - even for stupid kids! I guess PE must be much harder than gym.

Speaking of school, we all said prayers and sang the national anthem, and staying in detention after school caught all sorts of negative attention.

We must have had horribly damaged psyches. What an archaic health system we had then. Remember school nurses? Ours wore a hat and everything.

I thought that I was supposed to accomplish something before I was allowed to be proud of myself.

I just can't recall how bored we were without computers, Play Station, Nintendo, X-box or 270 digital TV cable stations.

Oh yeah . and where was the Benadryl and sterilization kit when I got that bee sting? I could have been killed!

We played 'king of the hill' on piles of gravel left on vacant construction sites, and when we got hurt, Mom pulled out the 48-cent bottle of Mercurochrome (kids liked it better because it didn't sting like iodine did) and then we got our butt spanked.

Now it's a trip to the emergency room, followed by a 10-day dose of a $49 bottle of antibiotics, and then Mom calls the attorney to sue the contractor for leaving a horribly vicious pile of gravel where it was such a threat.

We didn't act up at the neighbor's house either; because if we did, we got our butt spanked there and then we got butt spanked again when we got home.

I recall Donny Reynolds from next door coming over and doing his tricks on the front stoop, just before he fell off. Little did his Mom know that she could have owned our house. Instead, she picked him up and swatted him for being such a goof. It was a neighborhood run amuck.

To top it off, not a single person I knew had ever been told that they were from a dysfunctional family. How could we possibly have known that?

We needed to get into group therapy and anger management classes? We were obviously so duped by so many societal ills that we didn't even notice that the entire country wasn't taking Prozac! How did we ever survive?

LOVE TO ALL OF US WHO SHARED THIS ERA, AND TO ALL WHO DIDN'T; SORRY FOR WHAT YOU MISSED. I WOULDN'T TRADE IT FOR ANYTHING.

Starting the New Year right!

02:13 Jan 03 2008
Times Read: 1,072

We went to a nice New Years Eve party at a friend of Gina's. For those who may not know, Gina is an Alcoholic. She makes no secret of this, so I am not violating any trust by mentioning this. The Party was at the home of her AA sponsor and was attended primarily by members of her AA group. We had a great time and, of course, did not have to worry about driving after drinking, as soft drinks were all that was served.

On New Years Day we went to two seperate partys, The first was at the home of another one of Gina's "AA friends". It turns out she lives only 2 1/2 blocks from our house. We spent several hours there and had some great food and watched some of the Mummer's Parade. (If you want to know about the Mummers, send me a message and I will try to explain...It's a Philly thing!). We had Pork & saurkraut, Ham, mashed potatos, potatoe stuffing, soft pretzels and more and more! Around 5:00pm we went to a good friend from church's house for "eggnog".

The woman who's house we went to is the mother of one of our best friends, who also happens to be ou vetrenarian. She is a youth advisor at out church and is in the choir with Gina & I. Her Mom is almost 90 years old, and Gina drives her to dialysis treatments on Tuesdays. So we went over for "eggnog". Eggnog consisted of Baked Ham, smoked turkey, 12 bean soup, peas & rice, corn bread, candied sweet potatos, collard Greens, black eyed peas and...eggnog! While we were there a family came over who was introduced to us as Helen's(the mother) "Daughter" and "Son-in-Law" and their children. I still havent figured this out, as Gina's friend Dr. Marye we KNOW has a brother, but we had never heard of a sister. In addition, Helen, her husband (who passed away about 10 years ago) Marye and the brother we know are all African American, while the "Daughter" was asian! So, we have to ask Marye what the story is!. In any case, Helen's "Son in Law" is a composer and violin teacher. He brought his violin and played several pieces that he wrote that had never been heard by anyone before. It was truly awesome! It reminded me of the old "Currier and Ives" type Holiday scenes.

Truly an awesome way to start the new year with friends old and new that seem like family.
